100% stacked bar charts are an excellent choice for representing the relative proportions of categories within a whole.

While these charts are great for showing percentages, you may want to display the actual count values on the chart for a more detailed understanding.

In this guide, I'll explore how to display count values in 100% stacked bar charts in Power BI to provide both a percentage and count perspective to your audience.

Understanding 100% Stacked Bar Charts

Before we proceed with displaying count values, let's briefly review what 100% stacked bar charts are and why they are valuable:

  1. Relative Proportions: 100% stacked bar charts are used to illustrate the relative proportions of categories within a total, where each bar represents 100% of the whole.

  2. Percentage-Based: By default, 100% stacked bar charts show the percentage distribution of categories, making it easy to compare the contributions of different groups.

  3. Count Information: In some cases, it's beneficial to display the actual count values alongside the percentages to provide a more comprehensive view of the data.

Now, let's explore how to add count values to 100% stacked bar charts in Power BI:

Step 1: Create a 100% Stacked Bar Chart

  1. Open your Power BI report in Power BI Desktop.

  2. Select the data you want to represent in a 100% stacked bar chart.

  3. In the "Visualizations" pane, click on the 100% stacked bar chart icon to create the chart.

Step 2: Add Count Values

To add count values to your 100% stacked bar chart:

  1. In the "Visualizations" pane, find the "Data labels" option under Format your Visual.

  2. Toggle the "Data labels" option to "On" then toggle "Value" to "On".

  3. The default is to aggregate your data based on the data type. Since I'm aggregating text fields, it defaults to Count. If you're aggregating number fields, there may be an extra step to specify the type of value you want to display on the data label. You simple drag the field into the +Add Data box, choose Count, and you're done!

By following these steps, you can display count values alongside percentages in your 100% stacked bar chart, offering a more comprehensive view of your data and enhancing the understanding of your audience.

Conclusion

Displaying count values in 100% stacked bar charts in Power BI allows you to provide a dual perspective on your data, showcasing both the relative proportions and the actual counts of categories within a total.

This approach can help your audience gain deeper insights into the data and make more informed decisions based on the information presented in your visualizations.
