Power Query Keyboard Shortcuts

I hate using my mouse.

A lot of people focus on shortcuts in Excel, with good reason.

A smaller number look at shortcuts in the Power BI front end. 

This is a comprehensive list of 41 Power Query keyboard shortcuts to help you quickly navigate the back end. 

The only way to get better at using your keyboard for these shortcuts is using your keyboard for these shortcuts. 

Ban yourself from using your mouse.

If you do that, you'll end up saving hours over time. 

 

Basic Navigation 

  1. Ctrl + N: Create a new query.

  2. Ctrl + O: Open an existing query.

  3. Ctrl + S: Save the current query.

  4. Ctrl + C: Copy selected query elements.

  5. Ctrl + X: Cut selected query elements.

  6. Ctrl + V: Paste copied or cut query elements.

  7. Ctrl + Z: Undo the last action.

  8. Ctrl + Y: Redo the last undone action.

  9. Tab: Move forward through the Power Query user interface elements.

  10. Shift + Tab: Move backward through the Power Query user interface elements.

 

Query Editing 

  1. F2: Edit the selected cell.

  2. Enter: Confirm changes in the cell.

  3. Esc: Cancel editing or close the formula bar.

  4. Ctrl + Enter: Apply changes and keep the cell selected.

  5. Ctrl + Shift + Enter: Create a new line in the formula bar.

  6. Alt + Enter: Start a new line within a formula or expression.

  7. Ctrl + Space: Select the entire column.

  8. Shift + Space: Select the entire row.

  9. Ctrl + A: Select all query elements in the current step.

  10. Ctrl + Click: Select multiple non-adjacent elements.

  11. Ctrl + Shift + Click: Select a range of elements.

  12. Ctrl + D: Duplicate selected query elements.

  13. Delete: Remove selected query elements.

  14. Ctrl + F: Open the Find and Replace dialog.

 

Data Transformation 

  1. Ctrl + T: Create a table from the selected data.

  2. Ctrl + Shift + T: Convert a table into a list.

  3. Ctrl + Shift + F: Format table columns.

  4. Ctrl + M: Merge queries.

  5. Ctrl + F1: Expand or collapse the formula bar.

  6. Ctrl + H: Show or hide the Query Dependencies view.

 

Query Execution 

  1. Ctrl + E: Execute the current query.

  2. Ctrl + L: Load query results to a destination (e.g., Excel worksheet or Power BI).

 

Query Navigation 

  1. Ctrl + Up Arrow: Move to the previous step.

  2. Ctrl + Down Arrow: Move to the next step.

  3. Ctrl + Shift + Up Arrow: Move selected step(s) up.

  4. Ctrl + Shift + Down Arrow: Move selected step(s) down.

 

Advanced Techniques 

  1. Alt + Shift + F: Add a custom formula or function.

  2. Alt + D: Create a date calculation.

  3. Alt + N: Create a numeric calculation.

  4. Alt + S: Create a text calculation.

  5. Alt + C: Create a conditional column.
